Pond Code

These rules are for your safety.  Please print this page and keep it with you.

Do not go near ponds or rivers alone.  Tell an adult where you're going (unless you're one already).

Do not trespass on private land.  Always ask permission first.

Do not throw litter in ponds or rivers.

Always use a measuring stick or rule to check how deep the water is.  Keep well away from deep water.  Use a proper pond-dipping platform, or jetty, if one is provided.

Never drink from ponds or rivers or put pond equipment in your mouth.  Cover scratches or cuts with waterproof plaster or (even better) wear disposable plastic or rubber gloves.

Once finished, wash your hands thoroughly as soon as you can.  Don't handle food until you have done so.

Approach ponds quietly and try to keep your shadow off the water so the pond animals don't all hide.

Sweep your net through the water carefully. Try not to damage the plants in the pond.

Keep any animals you catch in water at all times and return them to the pond as soon as possible. If possible, try to keep herbivores and carnivores separate!

Do not remove animals from the pond.
